A Lifetime

A Lifetime

Could we make do with a small set of furniture throughout our lives, furniture that can adapt and stay with us throughout our lives?

Inspiration:

With inspiration from Ghanaian coffins. Where I traveled in 2015 with my family and learn that in Ghana they have special transition of making coffins and they also make beds in good handmade quality, that where both on sale through the streets we drove through. Even though they where living poor build houses. It’s there the idea of making one product with two functions, for both saving them material use and cost.

For few years I thought about this idea if it was too crazy to make and how to design a bed that did not look like coffin and vise versa coffin that did not look like bed. With no extra item's that had to been kept away in the basement when used in both situations. In order to to lose them trough the years. In end 2020 the idea came back to me when we bought a well designed coffin for my mother, that was soon after burned away and few months later buy new bed for my father I thought that my crazy idea was not so bad after all. Here we could have saved both time, material and money if my parents had each one bed that could transform to a coffin. I set out to make a bed that does just that.

We over consume materials and cut down trees like never before. Thus, it makes sense to use the material from our bed for the coffin that we-will eventually be buried in. This lets us reduce the consumption of materials, reduce manufacturing, cut costs and, not least, save time for those who are left behind, since the coffin is already there, ready for use.

An ideal confirmation present for the coming future.

After developing the idea for the last months and see the final result of beautiful wood work. I even think this coffin should not get burned after the funeral, but borrowed out through time and years for coming family funerals in the future and therefore burn the body in recyclable paper box. therefore save the material for even longer time.

The human population in the world has doubled since 1970 and more and more people chose to be cremated than buried in Scandinavia. Probably in coming future we dont have the chose anymore because of less space in world church gardens.

Presented for the first time at the Carpenters Autumn Exhibition 2022.
