Solstråle

Product Description:

A light in the darkness.

Solstråle is a sustainable design lamp inspired by the colours and textures of Icelandic lava and moss. Its purpose is simple: to capture the energy of sunlight and return it as light, warmth and calm in everyday life. The idea for Solstråle came from an awareness that many people — both young and older — experience periods of darkness, mentally as well as physically, especially during the winter months. At the same time, many light therapy lamps on the market are designed purely as treatment devices. They often look clinical and separate from everyday life, rather than belonging naturally in the home.

Solstråle was created as an alternative: a lamp that combines wellbeing, function and beauty in one everyday object. It is designed to support those who may need light therapy, without looking like a medical device, and at the same time to serve as a normal lamp for the whole family around the dining table, in the living room, or outdoors. The design is created as a meaningful object for everyday life throughout all twelve months of the year. The lamp is shaped with twelve surfaces around its body, each reflecting light differently and symbolising the changing rhythm of the year. Sometimes we need more light in certain periods, and Solstråle is designed to respond to that need.

Solstråle exists at the intersection of function, emotion and responsibility. It charges from daylight and transforms that energy into practical light, atmospheric warmth and a gentle sense of wellbeing. The lamp offers two lighting modes. A warm yellow light creates a calm and cosy atmosphere for everyday use, while a blue light mode can be used for light therapy during darker seasons. For therapeutic effect, the lamp should be placed approximately 30–40 cm from the user. A full charge provides approximately 4–5 hours of blue therapeutic light, while the warm yellow light can last for more than 20 hours, and potentially up to 48 hours at lower intensity, using significantly less energy.

Solstråle can stand, hang or be carried, moving naturally between window, table and room — indoors or outdoors. It can charge by the window during the day and later become a shared light source around the home. In this way, one single object gathers several functions and reduces the need for multiple products. The lamp also responds to a wider sense of preparedness. In times of stability, it creates atmosphere, comfort and everyday functionality. In times of uncertainty or crisis, it becomes an additional source of light — a practical and reassuring object for the home. Solstråle is designed not only for those living with depression or seasonal depression, but for everyone: a lamp for the whole family, in and beyond times of crisis. Sustainability is embedded throughout the lamp’s lifecycle. The lamp is primarily made from recycled paper, charged by solar energy and designed so that its materials can be disassembled, reused, recycled or returned to natural cycles over time.

The green colour of the lamp is created using natural pigments and recycled materials. The tone comes from spinach water and recycled green egg cartons, combined with small amounts of black lentil water and coffee, creating subtle dark particles within the surface. These tiny particles resemble grains of sand and give the lamp a living texture inspired by lava sand, moss and moss-covered lava fields. The surface is organic and varied — much like nature itself. To allow outdoor use during summer, the paper structure of the lampshade can be treated with gelatine and beeswax, creating a protective and water-resistant surface. Solstråle is a quiet design gesture with a clear purpose: to create light that cares for both people and planet — and to remind us that even the smallest light can make a difference.
